Top 20 Equity Options Traded
in August 2022
September 1, 2022
The end of the summer brings no joy to the markets. Major indices limped along through August hoping for positive hints from the Fed. But, alas, there was no joy as Chairman Powel and other members indicated that “it would be a mistake to declare victory over the inflation beast". So, we had inflation, the conflict in Europe, China vs Taiwan, supply chain and anticipated energy shortages weighing heavily on trader’s minds. The prior two months indicated a bear market rally that was not to hold by the end of late August. The Dow and S&P pulled back nearly 4% and Nasdaq retreated 5.4%.
Here is a chart comparing relative ETF performance of the Dow, Nasdaq and S&P for the month
Chipotle (CMG) retains the #1 position for yet another month. We see most of the same symbols in August vs prior months. Bed, Bath & Beyond (BBBY) had a significant run up mid-month followed by a reversal after it announced $500 million in financing and store closures. Mostly, thinly trading markets as the summer wraps. Per the trend, we expect to see volumes pick up in September.
