Top 20 Equity Options Traded
in December 2022
January 3, 2023
Hopes for a Santa rally in December were dashed as markets continued their slide across all major indices ending a rough year for bullish investors. Except for the energy sector, 2022 saw broad losses and the worst performance since 2008. The Dow, S&P and Nasdaq were down 8.8, 19.4 & 33.1% for the year, respectively.
The top stories in 2022 were the Fed and raising interest rates, inflation at a 40-year peak, war between Ukraine and Russia, and the collapse of crypto assets following multiple failures, most notably the FTX bankruptcy. The tech sector (AMZN, META, GOOGL, TSLA) took it on the chin more than any other group as value wins over growth companies. Many traders are licking their wounds and looking for a reset in the new year.
Here is a chart comparing relative ETF performance of the Dow, Nasdaq and S&P for the month of December and also the full year of 2022.
Tesla regains the top spot in December as concern over Elon Musk’s attention on Twitter distracts from his responsibilities to the EV company he founded. We saw greater focus on the auto industry with Ford re-entering the top 20 and Chinese EV company XPeng as a new entrant. We also saw AMC back on the list as the shine is off the apple with this meme stock performer in 2021.
