Top 20 Equity Options Traded
in October 2022
November 1, 2022
Markets showed signs of recovery in October, although it was not a broad rally across all sectors. The DOW saw the largest bounce in the month, up 13.95% but is still down -9.92% on the year. The S&P was up 7.99% in October bur remains down -18.76% for 2022. Lastly, the tech-heavy Nasdaq has been punished the most in year, down -29.77% after a relatively small rise of 3.9% last month.
Interest rates have pulled back from their peak in June. Proving that the market is not the economy, traders are pricing in future recovery from the current economic malaise. The main expectation is for Chairman Powell to announce a pullback on the Fed’s rates increases in the near-term (but not imminently). Although many are planning for higher interest rates for the near term, this shift from the current hawkish to dovish theme would reduce the cost of capital.
Here is a chart comparing relative ETF performance of the Dow, Nasdaq and S&P for the month of October.
The top 20 companies have remained consistent over the last few months. Chipotle (CMG) lost their stranglehold on the #1 spot to the active big-tech leaders.
