April 3, 2023
March started out like a lamb and ended up like a bull with markets rallying in the second half of the month. Early in the March, we were continuing debates about inflation, interest rates and the Fed. Everything changed mid-month with the bank failure of Silicon Valley Bank took the markets by surprise. After an anxious weekend, regulators announced a safety net but we restarted the debate about the Fed’s next rate hike. By the end of the month, recession fears subsided and markets manifested a rebound. The Nasdaq saw the biggest improvement, up 6.7% in March. The DOW Composite was up 3.5% by month end and the S&P500 recovered up 1.4%.
