Stocks in the U.S. are looking mixed after yesterday’s impressive rally off sharply lower lows as the Santa Claus rally continues into the abbreviated Christmas trading week (markets are open half day on Thursday and closed on Friday), extending broader market gains since the election. Stocks overcame concerns yesterday of a new COVID-19 strain from the U.K., matched with balanced optimism over Congress coming to an agreement for a virus relief package at the end of regular trading Monday. Overnight, Congress officially approved an $892 billion coronavirus aid package, throwing a lifeline to the nation’s pandemic-battered economy after months of inaction, while also keeping the federal government funded. President Trump is expected to sign the package into law. All three of the major U.S. stock averages pared earlier declines on Monday, helped by the stimulus news, vaccine optimism and increased M&A activity into year-end. The Dow manages to end the session up 0.1%, while the Nasdaq slipped 0.1% and the S&P 500 closed down 0.4%. Financials were the best S&P 500 industry sector, rising over 1%, helped by the Fed’s decision on Friday to allow banks to resume stock buybacks in Q1. In Asian markets overnight, The Nikkei Index fell -278 points to 26,436, the Shanghai Index dropped -63 points to 3,356 and the Hang Seng Index declined -187 points to 26,119. In Europe, the German DAX is higher by 150 points to 13,400, while the FTSE 100 is up about 15 points to 6,430.
