S&P futures are pulling back as the front month contract rolls to June, down -0.15% around 5,186 after major averages posted modest losses last week. The S&P 500 Index ended -0.7% lower on Friday and down -0.3% for the week at 5,123.69, while the Dow slipped -0.93% and the Nasdaq -1% on the week, while gold posted its highest daily and weekly close in history. Stocks futures are slipping ahead of a key inflation reading tomorrow morning with the February Consumer price index (CPI) to be released at 8:30 AM Tuesday, with investors hoping the “hotter” January print was just an aberration. Economists expect a 0.4% gain in consumer prices, or a 0.3% rise excluding food and energy. Last Friday, investors received mixed jobs data after stronger-than-forecast employment growth, rising unemployment, but weaker-than-expected wage data. In Asian markets, The Nikkei Index tumbled -868 points or 2.19% to 38,820, the Shanghai Index rose 22 points to 3,068, and the Hang Seng Index gained 234 points to 16,587. In Europe, the German DAX is down -123 points to 17,690, while the FTSE 100 slips -23 points to 7,625. Bitcoin prices extend 2024 gains, up around 5% at $71,500 (overnight highs), a new record and now up 71% YTD and Ethereum +2.9% at $4,030.
