U.S. futures are near the overnight highs of 4,188, up 0.4% after trading in a narrow range overnight (low 4,167.75) ahead of today’s Federal Reserve policy meeting at 2:00 PM ET, followed by a conference with chair Jerome Powell 30 minutes later. The Fed is fully expected to raise interest rates 50bps later today, as well as detail plans for the reduction of its balance sheet (with a small chance for a larger rate hike, though unlikely at this point) as the central bank ramps up its efforts to bring down high inflation. Oil prices are rising over 3% on reports the European Union intends to ban Russian crude imports over the next six months and refined fuels by year-end. Choppy markets on Tuesday ended with solid gains for major averages as the Dow rose over 1% and the Smallcap Russell 2000 advanced over 0.85% as investors await the Federal Reserve policy meeting later this afternoon. In Asian markets, The Nikkei Index remained closed along with the Shanghai Index while the Hang Seng Index fell -1.1% to 20,869. In Europe, the German DAX is lower by about -30 points to 14,000, while the FTSE 100 is down over -30 points to 7,525. Oil prices rising over 3% on reports the European Union intends to ban Russian crude imports over the next six months and refined fuels by year-end. Several high-profile corporate earnings results moving stocks/sectors overnight: to the upside (ABNB, AMD, LTHM, SBUX) and to the downside (AKAM, LYFT, RVLV, SWKS), and lots of economic data to chew on (ADP Employment, Trade Balance, S&P Manufacturing, and ISM services data) but market action likely focusing on the Fed later today.
