U.S. futures are trending lower ahead of key inflation data at 8:30 AM (and tomorrow) in the form of consumer prices (with producer prices (PPI) data tomorrow), as investors still fearful of rising prices even though the Fed continues to call the recent spike “transitory” in nature. Volatility is starting to pick up as the CBOE Volatility index (VIX) rises to its highest levels in two-months around 23.75 as the S&P 500 and Dow Jones Industrial Average finished sharply lower on Tuesday, while the tech heavy Nasdaq rebounded as much as 300-points off the lows before ending slightly lower. Surging commodity prices (lumber, copper, corn, iron ore, soybeans) and labor shortages fed fears that despite reassurances from the U.S. Federal Reserve, near-term price spikes could translate into longer-term inflation. In Asian markets, The Nikkei Index dropped -461 points to 28,147, the Shanghai Index gained 20 points to 3,462, and the Hang Seng Index rose 217 points to 28,231. In Europe, the German DAX is up around 50 points to 15,165, while the FTSE 100 is up over 50 points above the 7,000 level. Cyclical shares have climbed on expectations of a full economic reopening, helping push the S&P 500 and Dow to record highs late last week, but those gains could also be challenged in the new price environment. Oil prices rise this morning as the biggest U.S. pipeline remained closed following a cyberattack late last week.
