After snapping winning streaks for the S&P 500 (8-days) and Nasdaq (9-days) on Thursday after a spike in Treasury yields dampened investor sentiment, S&P futures are looking modestly lower overnight as markets are looking at a “flattish” week. The Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell and the Treasury market crashed the “rally party” following a weak 30-year bond auction yesterday (weak demand and largest tail on record) at 1:00 when the selling began, and then more “hawkish” commentary from the Fed Chairman at a speech later was the finishing touch on the day. Optimism flowed into the stock market recently after Powell last week said that an run-up in Treasury yields could push up borrowing costs and potentially finish the Fed’s inflation fight without further rate hikes. In Asian markets, The Nikkei Index dropped -78 points to 32,568, the Shanghai Index fell -14 points to 3,038, and the Hang Seng Index declined -308 points to 17,203. In Europe, the German DAX is down -32 points to 15,220, while the FTSE 100 drops -100 points of 1.28% to 7,350. The standout to the downside remains the Russell 2000 Smallcap index, down over -4% this week after a 7% rebound last week but remains down over -4% in 2023 compared to the S&P 500 13% advance YTD and the Nasdaq 29% jump in 2023 thus far. Economic data is light again today, but there are a few more Fed speakers on today’s calendar. Oil is headed for a third consecutive weekly drop amid concern about global demand and the unwinding of the war-risk premium and gold erases last week’s gains given the rebound in the dollar.
